When we think of the term failure to thrive, we often think of malnourished children in third world countries who have not received the kind of nurturing they need to grow strong, healthy bodies. However, this condition is a lot closer to home than many people realize – and it isn’t just children who are being affected by it.

Failure to thrive is also rampant in the elderly communities and elderly care environments of the world. While these individuals are fully grown adults, their bodies, minds, and spirits are wasting away. This condition could be due to a number of reasons, but the main conditions associated with failure to thrive in the elderly are depression, malnourishment, and disease.

Our bodies are just like plants. Once the seed has been sown and the sprout grows up into a strong stalk, the need for nurturing on all levels never ends. We still need food, water, sunlight, fresh air, and attention. Just because we’ve reached adult status and have, physically, grown all that we’re going to, our need to be nurtured doesn’t end. In order to remain healthy and sane, there are many things that we all need on a regular basis to thrive instead of just exist. Here are some of the most important ways that caregivers can assure that their elderly charges are getting everything they need to thrive.

Balanced diet

Poor eating habits can rob the body of the essential nutrients it needs. Be sure that your senior client is eating enough of the kinds of food that they need to maintain good health. If, for whatever reason, they are not able to do so, talk to their doctors about nutritional supplements and vitamins to fill in the gaps.

Communication and Interaction

Keep the seniors active in things they enjoy doing. Encourage them to take up hobbies, go on outings, and to interact with family, friends, and their peers. Talk to them and visit with them on a personal level regularly. Listen to them when they speak. Ask questions to find out what their fears, needs, or wants are and do what you can to alleviate them.

Activity

Plan outings with elderly clients to local landmarks or shopping venues. Go for walks in the neighborhood or in a nearby park. Find fun, but easy exercises that the seniors can do each day in the comfort of their own home. Encourage movement and activity whenever possible.
